Sarah Gronert passes gender test to play on women’s circuit
A female professional player who was born with both male and female genitalia has had her case
reviewed by a Women’s Tennis Association Tour ‘medical delegate’ to make sure that she
satisfied all the requirements to compete in the women’s game.

The delegate concluded that there was “sufficient independent and verifiable evidence” to show that Sarah Gronert, a
22-year-old German, was eligible to play women’s tennis.
Under the WTA Tour’s rules, if there is “any question as to the eligibility” of a player, the WTA has the right to “require a
player to submit to gender verification to determine sexual status”.

In addition, Gronert has also had to deal with being the subject of some cruel, vindictive comments. Gronert should be
applauded for having had the courage to carry on playing, having rightly decided that she was going to make the most
of her tennis talent, and this season she has made good progress with her career, winning two titles on the International
Tennis Federation’s (ITF) women’s circuit, which is below the main WTA Tour.
Since the end of last season, her ranking has improved by almost 200 places, and this week she is at a career high of
No 555 in the world.
The cruel comments have continued, though, as her title-winning tennis in Israel this month, for the second of this year’s
tournament victories, prompted an opponent’s coach to question whether she should have been allowed to play.
“There is no girl who can hit serves like that, not even Venus Williams,” said the coach, Schlomo Tzoref.
The WTA Tour confirmed yesterday that they had reviewed Gronert’s case.
“The Tour’s gender determination rule is similar to the International Olympic Committee’s rule, and under this rule,
Gronert is allowed to play Tour events as a female,” a spokesman said.
“The Tour’s medical delegate reviewed Miss Gronert’s case and determined that she is eligible to compete on the Tour.
“The medical delegate determined that sufficient independent and verifiable evidence existed to conclude that Miss
Gronert had satisfied all of the requirements of the tour rules in order to be eligible to participate in tour events.”
Understandably, the details of the case, such as the player’s medical records, will remain strictly confidential. The

WTA’s spokesman said that they were “not directly aware” of any complaints from other players or coaches about
Gronert.
A spokeswoman for the ITF said that the governing body had never received any formal inquiry or complaint about
Gronert’s eligibility.
“Sarah Gronert is legally and biologically a woman,” the spokeswoman said, “and as such perfectly entitled to compete
in ITF Pro Circuit events and, at some point if her ranking warrants it, in WTA Tour events.”
Had Gronert failed to submit to ‘gender verification’, the WTA could have immediately suspended her from competing.
Comparisons should certainly not be made with the most famous gender story in tennis history, that of Richard Raskind,
an American man, who underwent a sex-change operation to become a woman, Renee Richards.
The tennis authorities barred Richards from featuring on the women’s tour, but she subsequently sued and the United
States Supreme Court ruled that she had the legal right to play, leading to her appearance at the 1977 US Open. A
year later, Richards made the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Richards took issue with anyone who suggested that she had the operation for the main purpose of furthering her tennis
career. Richards went on to coach Martina Navratilova.
Gronert’s situation is clearly different from what happened to Richards, tennis’s first transsexual. Gronert was born
female, has remained a female, and has been legally certified as a female.
Following the ‘gender verification’ ruling, she is eligible to play in whatever tournaments her rankings, or any wild cards,
allow.
